There is something remarkable about being your authentic self.

Each person arrives at the present moment carrying a singular collection of experiences. We see life from our own vantage point, notice different details and develop perspectives shaped over a lifetime. We can become so accustomed to our natural ways of thinking and responding, qualities unique to us can feel ordinary.

Look closely at a fingerprint.

Every line follows its own path. Curves intersect and ridges move alongside one another, creating an unmistakable signature belonging to one person.

Our lives form a pattern of their own. Experiences become wisdom. Curiosity becomes knowledge. Practice becomes capability. Relationships deepen understanding. Courage expands confidence. Along the way, people recognize abilities in us, experiences reveal strengths and moments shape the way we understand ourselves and others.

Who Are You?

Human development often begins with questions about capability.

Consider the qualities people consistently seek from you. Notice where your attention naturally goes, where curiosity comes alive and where certain abilities emerge naturally.

Some people make others feel comfortable. Some see patterns inside complexity. Others ask questions capable of opening an entirely new conversation. Some bring calm and clarity to a challenging moment. Others recognize possibilities early.

Many valuable capabilities feel so familiar, we rarely give them a name.

When people have room to bring those abilities forward, something meaningful happens. Ideas emerge. Perspectives broaden conversations. Individual strengths become part of collective capability.

A servant leader helps create such an environment through listening, encouragement and genuine interest in the people being served.

Personal Note

I recently recognized how one of my own business practices reflects my philosophy of human development.

CG Excellence is a camera-off organization.

During a conversation, I listen closely. I hear the words someone chooses, the ideas taking shape and the meaning behind the message.

A voice carries so much information. There are pauses where someone is thinking, energy when an idea excites them and confidence emerging as a thought takes form.

The person has room to think, and I have room to listen.

Camera off. The individual becomes more visible.

Over time, a simple meeting preference helped me recognize something larger about my approach to development. I want to understand the person and discover the abilities already present.

For me, listening is part of seeing someone.

When people feel genuinely seen, they may begin recognizing qualities previously taken for granted. Experience can acquire new meaning. Natural abilities can become visible as strengths.

From Identity to Capability

Such an understanding has shaped Identity-Based Performance Development at CG Excellence.

Development begins with curiosity about the person. How do they think, communicate and contribute? Where are their strengths already creating value? Where can capability grow?

A person may carry far more capability than a résumé or job description reveals.

Recognition brings those capabilities into view. Purposeful development creates opportunities for greater expression. Personal Note on Remembering

For me, remembering began as a subtle voice. With each month and each year, it grew louder until I knew it was time to pay attention.

Meditation and exploration created the space for that knowing to emerge. Ideas became words. Experience found new purpose. Abilities I had carried throughout my life began connecting in ways I had not seen before.

The expression continues to evolve as life unfolds.

As my awareness expanded, so did my sense of what was possible. I began to experience intuition, creativity and knowing as part of something vast. Insight that became available when I became still enough to listen.

There are lessons we learn.

And there is wisdom we remember.

Remembering is a knowing.

The recognition that something within us has been there all along: an instinct, an ability, a way of reading a room, a sense of direction that may not require explanation.

For the frontline servant leader, this recognition can show up mid-shift, in a difficult conversation with a customer, in the split-second decision no manual anticipated. With every such moment comes an opportunity to remember.

Who am I?

Why am I here?

What am I naturally equipped to do?

What am I here to contribute?

Remembering moves us closer to who we have always been.

The Creative Vortex

Within each of us is a creative vortex. A place where intuition, imagination, experience, natural ability and possibility meet.

We enter it when we stop looking exclusively outside ourselves for direction and begin listening to what we already know.

An idea arrives. Something feels unmistakably right. A skill carried for years reveals a larger purpose. An unrelated experience becomes useful. A path appears.

One step leads to another, and with each step, another layer is remembered.

Often, discovery is recognition.

I know this.

I can do this.

This belongs to me.

The Treasure Chest

Every frontline leader carries a treasure chest of gifts, abilities and ways of perceiving.

Some are obvious early on.

Others seem to wait for experience, confidence, the right environment, or someone to recognize their value.

Recognize your natural abilities.

Access them consciously.

Strengthen them through learning, reflection and practice.

Apply them through service, leadership and the work in front of you.

The more deliberately we access our inner strength, the more available it becomes and the greater our capacity to use it when it matters most.

The Behavioral Overlay

Over time, we accumulate behavioral overlays—learned responses, protective patterns and beliefs shaped by experience.

Some origins are easy to trace. Others are less apparent. Over time, these patterns can become so familiar that we mistake them for identity.

A naturally expressive person learns to become quiet.
An intuitive person learns to distrust what they sense.
A creative thinker learns to seek permission.
A capable leader learns to wait to be chosen.

The attribute remains. What changes is our access.

Remembering invites us to look beneath these layers and recognize what has been there all along.

Knowing Thyself

There is tremendous power in knowing what we bring to every shift, every interaction, every decision.

Knowing what energizes our minds. How we respond when circumstances change without notice. When intuition is speaking. What we contribute that no policy or procedure can replicate.

This self-knowledge matters most on the frontline, where interactions cannot be scripted and circumstances cannot be predicted.

When we know our capabilities, we can reach for creativity, resourcefulness, empathy, experience, intuition and ingenuity.

Approval as the Compass

From an early age, we learn to look outward for signals: approval, acceptance, recognition, permission. We learn what is expected of us and, sometimes without realizing it, build ourselves around those expectations.

The people whose approval we seek are living their own lives, shaped by their own experiences, abilities and expectations.

They cannot know our path for us.

There may come a time when the life we are living and the life we know within ourselves begin to feel different.

That feeling deserves our attention.

When we trust that internal compass, we begin creating from a place of alignment.

That, too, is remembering.

From Knowing to Contribution

Remembering is also an outward journey.

What we remember about ourselves needs to be expressed, shaping how we serve, solve, lead, build, connect and contribute.

Our inner knowing becomes capability.

Capability becomes expression.

Expression creates value.

And value, shared well, becomes contribution.

• A natural ability to connect can become extraordinary service.

• Experience can become insight shared with a teammate.

• Creativity can become a better solution for a customer.

• Intuition can prompt a question others have not considered.

• Resourcefulness can turn an obstacle into possibility.

One leader's capability can become something of value to a team, an organization, a community or someone they may never know they influenced.

The Architecture of Now

We can spend a great deal of time thinking of our lives as something waiting to be constructed someday.

Yet the architecture is already unfolding in the decisions we make, the abilities we strengthen, the work we contribute, the way we serve others.
